Todd Melton:

Oak Ridge head baseball coach Todd Melton enters his 14th year in coaching and his third year at the helm for the Trojans program.


Coach Melton graduated from Tracy High School where he earned all-league honors in football and baseball. He continued his baseball career at Delta JC and then CSU, Sacramento, where he also obtained his Kinesiology degree and teaching credential. Melton’s coaching career began at Laguna Creek of the tough Delta League and became the head coach for 6 years and compiled a 112-55 (.670) overall record. This included 1 league title and his teams were in the playoffs 4 out of 6 years. Melton was Delta League Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2003. have continued on to play college and/or professional baseball, including Chris Kinsey (AA with Arizona Diamondbacks).

In his 6-year tenure at Laguna Creek, 22 players have continued on to play college and/or professional baseball, including Chris Kinsey (AA with Arizona Diamondbacks), Brad Kilby (AA with Oakland A’s), Ryan Hanlon (junior at UC Berkeley), and the 8th overall pick in the June Amateur Baseball draft, Casey Weathers (A with Colorado Rockies). Coach Melton was an assistant coach for Sheldon High School for 2 years and teaches at Matsuyama Elementary in the SCUSD.

Dustin Scheffel:

Entering his first year as assistant coach for the Trojans, Dustin Scheffel comes to Oak Ridge with a load of experience from both the collegiate and professional levels.

As an Oak Ridge Alumni, Dustin played 3 years on the Varsity Baseball team. Dustin began his sophmore year as starting pitcher for the Varsity team and continued to hold this position until he graduated in 1999. Dustin threw a no hitter his senior year against galt and was awarded MVP of the Sierra Valley Conference. Dustin was drafted in the 46th round by the Chicago White Sox in 1999 and had offers from Arizona State University, University of the Pacific, Loyola Marimount, Pepperdine, and Fresno State. Dustin elected to attend Sacramento City College in hopes to fast track a career in professional ball. While there, Dustin had minor injury set backs that kept him there for 3 years. As team captin, Dustin led his team to the final four where he threw a complete game shut out against San Matao.The Texas Rangers drafted him in the 26th round his freshman year as a draft and follow, and signed after completing his sophmore year in 2002. Dustin turned down a partial scholarship to University of Miami and a full ride scholarship to California State University Fullerton to play with the Rangers among many others.

Dustin spent the summer of 2001 in Danville, Illinios playing for the Danville Dans in the Central Illinois Collegiate League. There he was an All Star and led his team to win the CICL Championship.

In May 2002 after signing with the Rangers, Dustin reported to Port Charlotte Florida to begin his Minor League Carreer. While with the Texas Rangers, he played for the Port Charlotte Rangers, Polaski Rangers, Clinton Lumberkings, Spokane Indians, Stockton ports, Frisco Rough Riders, and Arizona Rangers. Dustin injured his shoulder, knee, and back and after four surgeries in four years he was foced to retire from professional baseball.

Dustin has dedicated lots of time to teaching young kids mechanics of the game through baseball camps and lessons. He has worked with the industries best like Orel Hershiser, Randy Johnson, Kerry Wood, Joe Nathan, Lee Tunnel, and Marty DeMerrit. He also played on teams with Ian Kinsler, Scott Feldman, Mark Texeira, Jonathan Paplebon, John Danks, and Hank Blalock who are all in the big leagues today. He looks forward to sharing what he's learned with the team and contributing to their future SVC win.
